American Dirt is a 2020 novel by American author Jeanine Cummins, about the ordeal of a Mexican woman who had to leave behind her life and escape as an undocumented immigrant to the United States with her son. Oprah Winfrey, in selecting American Dirt for her book club, said, “Jeanine Cummins accomplished a remarkable feat, literally putting us in the shoes of migrants and making us feel their anguish and desperation to live in freedom.” The controversy over the book, which had been highly praised prior to publishing, resulted in many book stores cancelling author signings and many Latinx authors complained that their work doesn’t get published while this work, written by a white woman receives a seven-figure advance. This should be an interesting read and discussion given the ongoing immigration situation.
